QR-Code for Nexus One Multi Touch Update

To make it really easy and simple for you, here is a QR-Code to Google’s Nexus One Update:

Nexus One Update Android 2.1-update 1 QR-Code Download directly from Google's Server

This will download the file “signed-passion-ERE27-from-ERD79.a487b405.zip” which has a size of 15,23 MB

Use your barcode scanner application, download the update directly to your SD Card and rename it to update.zip for example by using a file manager.

How to manually install the Nexus One Update NOW

I just updated my Nexus One manually and multi touch works just fine.

The update adds Multi Touch to Maps, Gallery and the Internet Browser. It also brings favorites for Maps, and Night Mode for Navigation with Google Maps and it is supposed to fix issues with bad 3G connections.

If like me you don’t want to wait for the update to spread via the mobile network, here is the tutorial that I followed to update my locked(!) phone:

Get the update from Google: http://android.clients.go…7-from-ERD79.a487b405.zip

Put the update on your SD card & rename it to update.zip

Boot in recovery mode (hold down trackball + power)

Go to bootloader -> recovery

Now there’s a picture of a droid with a triangle

Press the power button + volume up

Apply sdcard:update.zip

Updating

Reboot system now

Hope I’ve helped some people who do not want to wait any longer for the OTA!

When you click on the download link you might see a security warning which can be ignored safely. You are downloading the file from a official google server, they probably just didn’t sign the certificate, yet.

Use ‘Volume + and -’ to navigate through the menu once you are in your Nexus One’s recovery mode.

It’s up to you how you place the update.zip file on your Micro SD card. I used “adb push update.zip /sdcard” on my Ubuntu system in the Android development environment. You might download the file directly with your phone and use file manager to rename the file or you can just put the SD-Card in your PC’s card reader.

The update took less than 5 minutes for me and I had no problems at all. Just be patient, when everything is finished the phone boots automatically when you tell it to do so. After the update this is what your phone information will show you:

Just yesterday the first rumors about an upcoming Nexus One Over-The-Air (OTA) update started spreading lightning fast, especially on tech blogs and twitter. I first read about it on engadget.com Click on the link for details and even a video.

New Software Update for Nexus One phones

Starting today, Nexus One users will begin to receive an over-the-air software update on their phones. This update provides some great new features, and fixes a few problems that some users might have experienced, including:

Google Goggles: this mobile application will now be available directly on your device by launching it from your All Apps menu. Just use your Nexus One camera to start searching the web

Google Maps: the Maps application with be updated to a new version, Google Maps 3.4, which will include:

Starred items synchronized with maps.google.com – access your favorite places from your phone or computer

Search suggestions from your personal maps.google.com history – makes it easy to search for places you’ve searched for before

Night mode in Google Maps Navigation – automatically changes your screen at night for easier viewing and driving

Pinch-to-zoom functionality: devices will now include a new pinch-to-zoom mechanism in the phone’s Browser, Gallery and Maps applications

3G connectivity: we will provide a general fix to help improve 3G connectivity on some Nexus One phones

In order to access the update, you will receive a message on your phone’s notification bar. Just download the update, wait for it to install, and you should be all set. This update will be rolled out gradually to phones – and most users might not receive the notification until the end of the week. We hope you enjoy these new features and look forward to your feedback.

Getting a Nexus One Superphone … is easy, even in Germany

Getting your hands on a Nexus One is quite easy, especially when you live in the USA. Google itself is selling and distributing it, so get your credit card and surf to http://www.google.com/phone/ to buy it online.

If you need a dock to use your phone as a dimmed alarm clock or a bluetooth based music station, then add it to you basket, too.

In Germany the phone is not yet available, at least not officially through Google’s website, but with an US proxy server for your browser, a US based mailbox address and some patience you can still get it (UK based addresses are OK too). Another way to obtain this great device is eBay. But make sure that you check the seller’s history and reputation. Don’t pay much more than 500 Euros including everything (phone, shipping, customs, taxes …).

I actually got my phone from eBay from some Germany guy who imported it from the USA, so this way definitely works.
